PLANNING AND THE PUBLIC VOICE: Making the Future Happen at Virginia Key Beach

This site, part of the Florida Community Studies Consortium is designed to facilitate public input into the future land uses of Virginia Key. We encourage students and all residents to learn about the island – its curious history and strange land uses- so that we can all have more input into its future. Please feel free to send us your comments and notions about the future possibilities for different parcels on this 1,000 acre island.

Vir. Key Beach

The Miami-Dade NAACP may not be able to make the Mar. 29 hearing but wishes to express its strong support for restoration of Vir. Key Beach and we have a special interest in the proposal for locating a civil rights museum there

City Public Hearing March 29 6-8 pm

The hearing will take place at UM's Rosenstiel School Auditorium on Va Key and we hope that the public will show up in significant numbers. The key issues:
-What's to happen with the Marine Stadium site?
-Should there be an additional high school on the island?
-North Point area as a park or hotel land?
-future status of the Jimbo's area?
-land fill area as parks?

Potential

there is so much potential in this island that I just don't understand how it has come to be forgotten by the community. We must inspire those around us to be active in reviving not only the beach at Virginia Key but also its surrounding sites, such as the Miami Marine Stadium; I can just see how much the young generation can benefit from having a new venue in our city for a variety of musical talent to perform at.

marine stadium

In my opinion, Ithink we should remodel the marine stadium to begin it back to life and to honor its history.
